OUR MAIN FOCUS BLACK PEPPER Botanical name Piper Nigrum
Pepper has been known as the king of spice. It is an epiphytic vine that grows on a support or host tree. Propagation may occur naturally when a ripe seed falls to the ground, but commercially it is done from male stem cuttings.
Black, White, and Green pepper corns are derived from the same plant. Picking and drying methods produce the variations in color and flavor.
The Red colored seeds in your colorful blends are not pepper. They are known as French Pepper Rose, botanically Schinus Molle, and have a sweet taste.
Picking is done by hand. Our pepper is sun dried. Drying commercially is often done in a kiln for several hours. Sun dried pepper is rich in flavor and aroma.
At Orchard del Sol we use organic farming practices which includes composting, manual weeding, and the foliar spraying of micro nutrients. The sustainability of the farm includes providing fair wages to employees.
COMPOSTING & ORGANIC PRODUCTION
Composting provides the organic fertilizer used throughout the farm. Grass clippings, leaves and mulch are put into the composting bins. Calcium and micro nutrients are added. Drying is monitored carefully
