HIBISCUS FLOWER
Hibiscus Sabdariffa
Rosella
This flowering shrub produces a short lived flower that quickly produces a calyx or seed pod. It grows in many countries but commercially Australia seems to be the major producer. Hibiscus Flower, commonly known as Jamaica or Rosella, is really the just the calyx following the flowering.
More of a perennial type shrub it is self perpetuating from the seed pod. Harvesting is done in two stages. The harvesting of the calyx and the separating of the seed pod from those protective petals that are called flowers is all done by gloved hands to protect one from the fine hair that resembles cactus fuzz.
Here at Orchard del Sol after harvest we pull up the stock and replant later in the season. While our experience is still in the juvenile stage we seem to feel that this process gives us control of the harvesting which follows pepper harvest. The sun dryer once again is used and protects the flavor.
You will find hibiscus flower mentioned in many herbal tea blends. It gives color and flavor. The flavor resembles that of cranberry or citrus. It is high in vitamin “C” and is medicinally used for treating colds, sore throats and urinary disorders.
At the farmers market I often offer samples to the children and have been very surprised to find many of them enjoy it even though I do not add sugar. It is a great alternative to pops or sugared drinks.
You will find it a great summer time refreshment poured over ice with a squeeze of lime. Caffein free it can be enjoyed hot or cold, sweetened or not.
